Mouth Piece

Mouth Piece, video, 1992, Director and producer: Igor Ridanovic

This is my first piece devoted to speaking out for and about pleasure. I do so by lovingly and erotically, tenderly and boldly giving details about an intimate relationship and by interweaving that with myths, legends, and philosophers’ ideas about the mouth. Smiling, kissing, singing, public speaking, and eating all receive passionate attention. The complete text of Mouth Piece appears in Erotic Faculties and in Clairvoyance (For Those in the Desert.

An hour is a long time to listen to text being read, a long time to sit in a theater with no visual stimulation beyond the contrast of dark hair, white leather, and red lipstick. But Frueh's presence is compelling and her writing both intelligent and sensuous. By performing Mouth Piece, Frueh confirms its content: she uses her voice, her language, to gain freedom and power. By speaking out simultaneously as scholar and as sexual being, she slays several gender-based dragons with one stroke of her sword-tongue. . . . Frueh metaphorically sought out the Aphrodite and Athena within herself.
